Satan's Collection Day

Okay I had to write a "scary" story since Halloween is coming up. I'm sure it's not the greatest in the world but hopefully it's at least amusing.

Satan's Collection Day

The fog rolled past her as she sped along the highway. It was a cloudy day and the heavy fog misted over everything. She kept looking in her rear view mirror to see if the sun had started to rise yet. Even though it was a cloudy day the sun should have been rising by now. This morning didn’t feel right to her. Come to think of it the night hadn’t felt right either. She had spent most of the night restless and unable to sleep. As the fog crept in closer she flipped on the radio hoping that would sooth her. Static crackled out of the speakers. She reached down and searched through all of the stations. But none of them would come through. “That’s odd” she thought and she peered hard through the windshield. She saw that her antennae had been broken off. “Damnit” she hissed angrily.

She’d just have to settle for the cd’s she had with her. She hit the button and music poured through. She tried as hard as she could to shake the odd feeling that had enveloped her but it was no use. The farther she drove the more pronounced the feeling became. She felt almost as if someone or something were watching her. She had to slow down due to the density of the fog. She couldn’t see any farther than two feet in front of the car. Her headlights did nothing to penetrate the thick air. She had given up on superstition a long time ago but this day was starting to get to her. Not only had she been feeling uneasy since the night before, but it was 8:30am and the sun hadn’t even began to rise, the fog was getting thicker and thicker and it was also October 31st, Halloween.

A chill ran down her spine and the hair on the back of her next stood up as she had a realization. Her uneasiness had started at precisely 12:00am. She had awoken from a deep sleep to the sounds of the wind howling. It had sounded unnatural at that time of night. It was also what was considered the witching hour or the undead hour. She had remembered studying this fact back when she was a girl, when she still believed in such things.

Finally after driving for a few more minutes the fog became so thick she had to pull the car over. She parked the car on the shoulder of the rode and got her cell phone out. She tried to put a call through to the local sheriff’s office but she had no signal. “Shit” She exclaimed franticly. She tried desperately to place another call but still no signal. She slammed the steering wheel with her fist. This couldn’t be happening.

Growing panicked by the second she stepped out of her car. Her breath caught in her chest. The fog made is hard to breath and it stung her eyes. It didn’t smell like fog should either. It smelled of rotten eggs. She stood there looking all around her. There was something nagging at the back of her mind, like she should know something. Finally it hit her. “Sulfur” she gasped. With her heart pounding in her ears she fumbled with her keys and popped the trunk. She rummaged around hastily until she found what she was looking for. Her bible and cross. She hadn’t unpacked them from the emergency box she had kept in her old car. She quickly shut the trunk and stumbled back into the car.

Once inside she gasped for clean smelling air. But there was none. It all smelled of sulfur and was getting stronger. She locked the doors. “A lot of good that will do” She mumbled. She wrapped the string on her cross around her hand so she had a firm hold on it. Then she opened the Bible. She sat there for a moment trying to remember everything she had learned years ago. This was a rare occurrence she was experiencing. This was a true Halloween. If you could even call it Halloween. It was a day of the dead. The legend was that God made a deal with Satan that one day every two hundred years Satan and his ranks would be allowed to walk the Earth to collect the souls of all those he could. But if one soul refused Satan and called on God and the Angels anytime during this one day Satan and his army would have to return to hell.

She had forgotten that this was that supposed Halloween. Satan’s collection day. She flipped to Psalms and began reading number 23. It was her favorite and had always comforted her as a child.

A dark shadow flew past the windshield causing the car to rock. Her eyes grew wide as she continued to watch. More and more shadows flew around her. Then all of a sudden they parted and seemed to land. Her heart felt as if it would explode as she looked around her. Just a window between them she stared at these winged creatures. They were all staring at her with menacing hollow eyes. She turned her attention to the area they had parted from. There standing at the hood of her car was one of the most handsome men she had ever seen. He looked at her and smiled. As he did this he threw his hands in the air and the windshield shattered to a thousand pieces. She shrieked. She felt herself lifted out of the car and sat softly before him on the hood.

Her senses were going haywire, she felt drawn to him and it seemed as if there was nothing she could do about it. He stepped closer and lowered himself down to her level. He grabbed her close to him and started to kiss her softly. It felt so wonderful. She was groggy with ecstasy and lust. She returned the kiss. She felt him smile and he started kissing her harder more urgently and laid her back upon the hood of the car.

All of a sudden his weight felt crushing and she remembered all of the winged creatures standing around them. What was she doing?! This was HIM! The Prince of Darkness himself. She had known it before he had willed her out of the car. Why had she let him have this affect on her? She opened her eyes and saw his staring into her. Twinkling with a dark light. She started to feel strange as if her very life were being sucked out of her.

“No, no!” She screamed in her mind. “This can’t be happening! I won’t let it!” And with that last thought she brought her hand up that had been holding her cross and pressed it to his forehead.

Screaming in pain he pushed off of her. She immediately stood up. The winged creatures were shrieking their disapproval. The Prince righted himself and glared up at her.

“You shouldn’t have done that” He says in a silky voice.

She knew better than to speak to him. She stared at him and started reciting the prayer she had written after learning of this terrible day. She couldn’t believe she remembered it after all this time.

“My God, my King of Heaven command your angles on this day of the dead for your faithful is calling. I reject the entity before me and invoke your love and wrath upon him.”

The Prince shouted with rage and began to change before her eyes. The handsome man melted away to a larger stronger version of the winged creatures. He flapped his wings and started to rise. She stood unwavering and repeated her prayer. The Prince let out one last shout and charged at her. At that moment she saw a streak of light and saw a man’s figure land before her. The Prince stopped the winged creatures that surrounded them turned into shadows once again and vanished. Slowly the Prince himself backed away eyeing the angel warily and disappeared into the fog. The angel turned around and smiled at her. “You are safe now” He whispered

The next thing she knew she was lying in her bed at home with sunshine streaming through the blinds. She sat up and shook her head. It had all been a dream. Then she looked down and in her hand was the cross.

Suvvy, you have raw talent girl. That story sucked me right in. I was shivering with dread when you wrote about the dark shadows. I could feel her panic.

And, being a Christian woman, the power that comes with knowing you have authority in the name of Jesus Christ to rebuke those evil spirits - it sent a thrill through me to read of her doing just that.

Well done, sweetie!

PS: I miss you! Why haven't you been on msn lately, missy mae?! lol
